What does it look like: Ever since I discovered the deliciousness, lightness and freshness of Vietnamese food in a small hole in the wall restaurant on the Gold Coast, Australia, I have been looking for good Vietnamese in Dubai. I can say with certainty that the search has ended in Voi. Luxurious colonial decor—think high ceilings with sparkling chandeliers, rich and understated furnishings, and monochromatic color schemes—may be a far cry from a family-run kitchen, but the food is just as delicious, or more .
Choosing to sit on the outdoor terrace, I ordered steamed imperial guinea fowl dumplings as an appetizer, while my partner chose French crepes, stuffed with chicken, chanterelles and bean sprouts. The sparkling, translucent wrap of my dumplings-the three accompanying sauces complement them perfectly-a subtle dance in my mouth. My partner’s crepes are a collision of texture and taste, with a rich sauce that we can’t get enough of. In a Vietnamese restaurant, we couldn’t live without “Phò” (soup), so we chose Pot Au Phò, a fragrant, warm broth with tender beef cheeks, bone marrow and rice noodles. The appetizers are large, so we can’t pair my steamed Pacific cod with herbs (cooked in banana leaves) with cabbage and paella, or the grilled black foot chicken ordered by my partner. However, we cannot resist dessert. My partner’s Valhrona Variation, a plate of chocolate fudge, cocoa sorbet, and chocolate orange cream (think the luxurious flavored Jaffa cake!), miraculously wiped off in a few minutes. I chose flame banana with honey ice cream-the perfect combination of texture, temperature and taste.
