Bake, but not soggy!

Hello Lil’ Luna readers! It’s me, Natalie from Life Made Simple. Today I am back with another amazing recipe. These sweet potato fries are the best homemade fries I’ve ever had! They’re crispy and delicious and healthier because they’re oven baked to perfection!

When my husband ordered sweet potato fries at a restaurant a few years ago, I fell in love with them. They are my favorite right now and I’m so glad we can now make them at home. That being said, non-fried homemade fries are often hard to get nice and crispy.

Thankfully, I have some tips and tricks for you to help you bake these beauties to perfection. No more soggy fries! !

How to Make Sweet Potato Fries

This recipe is simple, but it does take a little time. However, these tips will help ensure that the fries are always crispy. 😉

Cut and soak. First, try to make sure your fries are all the same thickness. Once you’ve chopped them, place them in a large bowl of icy salted water. Let them soak for at least an hour, or another hour if you have time.

coat. Drain, place the cornstarch and some seasoning in a resealable bag and shake until coated.

bake. Then add a little oil (I used an olive and veggie mix) and place on a hot sheet pan with a sheet of parchment paper to make sure there is enough room to bake the fries. Once they’re in the oven, just turn them once and let them go until the ends start to crisp.

tip: Bake in the upper third of the oven. Removing the pans from the heat will help them get charred before they are thoroughly cooked.

It will take a little while, but bear with me… I promise the results are well worth it! Let the fries cool for a few minutes, then dig in!

other cooking methods

Can I air fry sweet potato fries? This is a great option to get a delicious crispy fry. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F, then lightly spray the fryer basket with oil. Place the fries in a single layer in the basket. Fry for 8 minutes, turning them halfway through.

How to Baked Sweet Potato Fries? You will need to cut the potatoes into thick pieces and precook them for about 5 minutes. While the potatoes are boiling, lightly grease the grill and turn the grill to medium heat. Once they boil, drain and pat dry. Season them and put them on the grill. Bake for 8-10 minutes, turning halfway through, until cooked through.

service and storage

Dip: While they are absolutely delicious straight from the oven, the dipping sauce only enhances the flavor! The options are endless. Of course, you can pair it with classic ketchup or ranch dressing. You can also mix your own mayo dip. Try spicy mayo (¾ c mayo and ¼ cup sriracha) or fry sauce (¾ c mayo and ¼ tomato sauce)

Store/reheat. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. Reheat in oven at 400°F for 5-8 minutes or until warm.

Go ahead and freeze. You can easily freeze sweet potato fries for later use. Peel the potatoes and cut them into fries, then blanch the fries in boiling water: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Cook the fries for 5-7 minutes. Drain and immediately place the fries in a bowl of ice water for 3-5 minutes. Drain and pat dry.

Next, freeze them quickly. Lay the fries in a single layer on the cookie sheet. Put them in the refrigerator until they start to harden, about an hour. Remove and place in an airtight freezer-safe container for up to 12 months.

Heat: Preheat oven to 450°F and bake for 25-30 minutes, stirring halfway through.

These sweet potato fries are absolutely delicious and I hope you love them as much as we do! We’re really obsessed, even my kids now prefer them to regular fries – they’re just that good!

  • 3 medium sweet potatoes peeled and cut into ¼” sticks
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt divided
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon chili
  • 1/8 teaspoon coriander
  • 1/8 teaspoon cumin
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil (or vegetable and olive oil mixture)
  • Sea salt flakes optional
  • Place raw sweet potato fries in a large bowl, add enough cold water to cover the fries, and sprinkle with 2 tsp. salt on top. Allow 1 hour to sit, more if possible.

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Place rimmed cookie sheets (standard size) in the oven to heat. Cut a piece of parchment to fit the paper and set aside.

  • Drain the fries and place in a large plastic bag with cornstarch, paprika, garlic, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cilantro, and cumin. With a little air left in the bag, zip and shake until evenly spread. Use the same bowl to pour the fries into the oil.

  • Take the baking sheet out of the oven, put the parchment on it, and carefully toss the fries in, making sure there is room between them to bake (you don’t want them to steam). Bake for 20 minutes, stirring, then bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until crisp and golden brown. Remove from oven, sprinkle with sea salt, and let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy now!

I’m really excited to try this recipe, Natalie! It looks amazing! We love sweet potato fries, my husband especially. 🙂 For more great recipes from Natalie, visit Life Made Simple.
