Like a fried dough stick

Sara Lee sent me some of their new angel cakes for me to try, and I am happy to say that it is super delicious! The best thing about it is its defrosting and service, and allows quick and easy customization. With it, I decided to try a new recipe and came up with some angel food cake Churro Bites.

Before I say more, I just need to tell you my husband’s reaction after tasting it… He tasted it and said, “Oh my God, these taste like fried dough sticks!” My answer was, “This is what they should be made!”

His answer was, “I mean, it’s like real fried dough sticks…from Disneyland!” Needless to say, he really liked them and quickly ate them. The children also liked them very much and kept asking for “cinnamon snacks”. I am so glad we found another fast and delicious food on Sunday morning!

How to make angel food cake Churro Bites

thaw. Let your angel cake thaw. After thawing, cut the cake into cubes. My cube is about 1.5 inches x 1.5 inches.

saute. Heat vegetable oil over medium-low heat. Fry the cubes until golden brown.

season. Once they are golden brown, immediately put them in a bowl with cinnamon and sugar and stir. Keep doing this until they are all completed. For more flavor, mix 1 cup of powdered sugar with a tablespoon of milk, mix and drizzle on the bite. Please enjoy!

notes: I only fry two sides, but feel free to fry more to get a crisper texture. You may need to pay close attention to them, lest they harden and lose the huge fluff of angel cake.

Recipe tips

Frying temperature: When frying anything, getting the right oil temperature is usually a bit tricky. One way I check the correct temperature is to stick the end of a wooden spoon in oil. If the oil around the spoon is foaming, then it’s ready. If it hisses, turn off the heat violently. If it does not foam after one second, turn up the heat. Once you think you have the right temperature, add a “tester” cube. It should take 1-2 minutes for the top and bottom.

Fried substitute: If you have an air fryer, the air fryer is an excellent alternative to a frying pan. Preheat the air fryer at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Place the cube in a single layer and spray it with cooking oil. Fry for 8-10 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Repeat with the remaining cubes.

Angel cake: I want to clarify that I specially made this recipe with Sara Lee brand angel cake. After frying, I let them drain on paper towels. I have some reviewers who use other brands of food cakes just for their bite to absorb too much cooking oil and make them lose their appetite. Since I haven’t tried this recipe with other brands, I recommend sticking to the Sara Lee brand for best results. If you happen to use another brand successfully, please leave a comment.

Dipping sauce: If the fritters are not great, because it is your taste buds, they will definitely be spun by adding delicious sauces and dipping them into it
