What is Chicken Souvlaki?

Hello again! I’m Alicia from Baker Upstairs and I have the most delicious chicken recipe to share with you today!

This easy chicken souvlaki recipe is one of my family’s favorite meals. It’s delicious, easy to make, and always brings a smile to my picky eater. It’s ready in about an hour and is the perfect easy weeknight meal.

You might be wondering what exactly is a chicken kebab? ! Souvlaki is a popular Greek fast food consisting of small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables, grilled on skewers.

This is one of my favorite Greek dishes I’ve ever had at one of our favorite Greek drive-thru restaurants. But since we recently moved, I’ve been needing to find a recipe that I can make at home!

How to Make Chicken Kebabs

pickled. To do this, I marinate the chicken with a simple yogurt and lemon marinade, then thread it on the kebabs with red pepper and red onion wedges.

Baked. My husband likes to use his grill with any excuse, so we grilled for 6-8 minutes per side.

If you don’t have a grill (or don’t want to stand out in the cold waiting for the kebabs to cook), You can also easily bake these skewers in the oven.

Oven version. I like to line a baking sheet with foil and put a cooling rack on top and put the chicken on the rack. It helps the air circulate better around the chicken as it cooks and gives it a barbecue-like texture.

Serve. You can eat it straight from the kebab, but my favorite way to eat it is in a warm pita with tzatziki and sliced tomatoes.

If you haven’t had tzatziki before, it’s a cucumber garlic yogurt sauce and it’s delicious. I found it at Trader Joe’s and other grocery stores in the deli section, or you can easily make your own.

Variety

  • Skewer: I recommend investing in stainless steel skewers if you can. They can be found at home improvement stores or online. They can be washed and reused in many roast recipes. However, you can also buy a pack of wooden bamboo skewers at the market. Once they are used, you need to throw them away.
  • use beef: You can use beef for this recipe. Just find your favorite cut of beef, cut it into small pieces and marinate like chicken, maybe even longer to actually get into the meat.
  • Other vegetables: Zucchini or any type of bell pepper are great additions.

lead and store

go ahead: You can marinate chicken anywhere for 30 minutes – overnight. If you want to make it ahead of time, just let the chicken pieces sit in the marinade longer than the recipe says. Once you’re ready to complete the recipe, skewer or grill the chicken.

arrive shop For this recipe, place the cooked chicken in an airtight tupperware or ziploc bag.

target when reheat It’s about keeping as much moisture as possible. The trick is low heat and time. Turn off the power to the microwave and cook until warm. If you use an oven, wrap the meat in foil and reheat at around 200-250 degrees.

The yogurt marinade makes the chicken nice and tender, which is delicious with the onions and peppers. This easy chicken kebab has always been a dinner favorite at our house!
