Simple Mr. Crocker Recipe | Little Luna

Croque Monsieur is not a typical ham and cheese sandwich! It is coated with Dijon mustard and egg, then baked or deep-fried into a hot plate.

This sandwich reminds me of Monte Cristo (another favorite), but it tastes completely different. Both main dishes are accompanied by a light arugula salad.

What is Mr. Crocker?

Have you tried Mr. Crocker? If not, you may want to know what it is! This is a baked or fried ham and cheese sandwich. Doesn’t it sound the same? Well, it is, but it is also delicious.

You add all the ingredients to the sandwich, then dip it in the milk and egg mixture (almost like French toast!) and then fry it in butter like grilled cheese. It’s simple, right?

The inside is fragrant and soft, and the outside is golden and crispy.

How to make Mr. Crocker

These sandwiches require more work than grilled cheese, but still just as easy!

Mix the mayonnaise and mustard in a small bowl. Spread on 4 slices of bread. Add cheese and ham to each slice of bread. Put another slice of bread on top of the ham.

At the same time, whisk the eggs and milk in the pie pan until they are completely combined.

Put the butter in the frying pan and melt it.

Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture (make sure all sides are coated), then put in a pan with butter. Fry until golden brown on both sides (a few minutes per side).

Serve with soup or salad, for example:

Leftovers: Store leftovers in Ziploc or wrap them in tin foil. Keep them in the refrigerator for a few days. Reheat in the oven, toaster oven, frying pan, or use a microwave if you are in a hurry.

Variety

ladies and gentlemen.: Croque means “tightening” and Monsieur means “sir”. In other words, this is a “Mister Crunch” sandwich. You may be thinking, “If there is a husband, will there be a lady?” I am glad you asked!

The female counterpart of this sandwich is called Croque Madame. You use the same method to make sandwiches, but add an upward-facing egg on top. This is because the added eggs resemble a woman’s hat. How interesting is that!

Some other simple changes: In addition to turning this sandwich into Mrs. Cola by adding a simple egg, you can also switch with other ingredients.

  • Gruyere cheese is often used
  • Sprinkle Provence vanilla or thyme on top
  • Bread: French bread, sourdough or any bread similar to brioche
  • Mini sandwiches can be made with baguettes
