In the 1930s, Ruth Wakefield and her husband ran Toll House Inn. Wakefield breaks the semi-sweet chocolate bars into small pieces with ice axe, and then mixes them into brown sugar dough to make chocolate chip cookies.

In 1939, she sold Nestlé the right to copy her recipe on its packaging, so Nestlé Toll House biscuits were born!
