If you know me, you know how much I love Disney. In particular, how much I love Disney food! I have some Disney copycat recipes on the site including hand dip corn dogs, mint julep and dole whip! This recipe is another favorite.
imitators of disneyland
We love going to Disneyland as a family and enjoying not only the fun rides and atmosphere but also the food. We love to try all the different goodies they have there, one of our favorites is the Monte Cristo sandwich, which you can get at Café Orleans and Blue Bayou in Disneyland.
So, what is a Monte Cristo sandwich? Monte Cristo is a fried ham and cheese sandwich, a variation on the French classic Croque Monsieur sandwich. It’s more savory than sweet, but with the powdered sugar, it does have a little sweetness that takes it to the next level. It is usually served with raspberry jam to enhance the sweetness.
With or without sauce, this sandwich is a paradise. It was definitely on our “must have” list when we visited Disney. Luckily for you, they are easy to make!
How to Make a Monte Cristo Sandwich
Like I said, these sandwiches are easy to make. They can be made in the deep fryer or fryer and require a few basic ingredients. Here’s how to make them:
batter. To make the batter, sift the flour, baking powder and salt. In a separate bowl, combine water and eggs. Add egg mixture to flour mixture and mix thoroughly.
gather. To make a sandwich, place 1 slice of cheese between 1 slice of turkey and 1 slice of ham. Cut sandwiches in half and use toothpicks to hold sandwiches together.
saute. Dip in batter and fry in 360 degree oil until golden brown. Blot dry with paper towels. Remove toothpicks and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
Can you fry Montecristo in an air fryer? Yes, an air fryer is a great option. Preheat the air fryer to 350ÂşF. Line your basket with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray. Air fry for 8-10 minutes. Flip the sandwich and fry for another 8-10 minutes. Remove and enjoy!
Raspberry Dip
These Montecristo sandwiches are served with a very delicious raspberry sauce. It may sound crazy, but the combination of sweet and savory is divine. Here’s how it’s made!
In a pan add:
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- ÂĽ cup cold water
- ÂĽ cup lemon juice
Mix, then add 2 cups fresh or frozen raspberries. At this point, you can add more sugar to taste if you want it sweeter. Bring to a boil. Continue to boil for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
Tips and Variations
Variety. We haven’t really tried other variations of this recipe, but it’s easy to do. You can change it up with different meats and cheeses. At Cafe Orleans they even offer a full cheese version which is very good and easy to make. Just spread a few more slices of cheese instead of meat!
freezing. Like most foods, the Monte Cristo sandwich is best eaten right away. However, you can safely freeze it for 1-2 months for later use. Wrap each sandwich individually in plastic wrap, then cover with aluminum foil. Tag content, including date.
To eat: Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the plastic wrap and rewrap the sandwich in foil. Put in the oven for 20-30 minutes. Remove foil and bake sandwiches for 1-2 minutes per side for a crispier crust. Top with powdered sugar and jam.
Reheat. If you have any leftovers, store the sandwiches in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. We do not recommend reheating in the microwave. Use a stove top, oven, or standard oven instead.
Now, I have to warn you…these sandwiches are hard to eat more than 1 or 2 because they are deep fried and a little heavy, but they are delicious! ! I’m looking forward to trying it out…especially if you’re already a fan of Disneyland goodies. 🙂 If you give it a try, let me know what you think.
