Smoothies are one of my favorite ways to sneak in fruits and vegetables for the day. I make smoothies for myself and my kids almost every day. My kids love smoothies and I love that they get the nutrients they need – especially when we’re sneaking in kale.
What are the health benefits of kale? Kale is a nutrient-dense food that provides a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Kale can also help lower someone’s cholesterol and fight carcinogens.
How to Make a Kale Smoothie
The main ingredients needed for this kale pineapple smoothie are:
- Chopped kale leaves (you can freeze kale packs and put individual kale in a blender when needed)
- skim milk
- Pineapple
- frozen bananas
- vanilla yogurt
- frozen pineapple
- frozen strawberries
- Stevia (slightly sweet)
Toss everything in the blender in the order listed in the recipe. Blend all ingredients until smooth. If it’s too thick, you can add more milk or a little water. Blend until you get the consistency you want! Pour into a glass and serve immediately.
tip: if you want Avoid getting any leafy kale chunks In your smoothie, place the kale leaves and skim milk by themselves in a blender. Mix them together first until smooth. Then add the rest of the ingredients and mix. It’s that simple! No one likes kale chunks in a smoothie. Must be smooth!
How can you make this recipe dairy free? Use any milk substitute in place of skim milk, such as almond, soy, oat, cashew, or coconut milk. They also make milk-replacement yogurt, and the Silk brand has several different types worth checking out. The texture of these yogurts may be slightly thinner, so you can add more ice cubes to the smoothie to get the desired consistency.
Why don’t you try kale in a smoothie? Kale is known for its bitter taste and unpleasant smell. To avoid this in smoothies, your best bet is to cut kale into small pieces and freeze them. Freezing it will get rid of some of the dirt-like smells and get rid of pungent odors. I still recommend doing this and mixing it with the milk first to make sure there are no chunks of kale in the smoothie. The best way to hide the taste of kale is to hide it with citrus or candy.
