Brussels sprouts and bacon = delicious!

Bacon is my first love. Bacon goes with almost any food. Donut? Yes. over a burger? Yes. Sprinkle on a salad? You know. My new favorite favorite these days – chopped and tossed with Brussels sprouts (our new favorite veggie)!

Today’s recipe includes beloved bacon that will not only make you eat vegetables, but make you fall in love with them. I bet even your pickiest kid will love this dish. Give it a try!

Brussels sprouts often get a bad rap. They can become soggy and smelly if not cooked properly. On the other hand, when cooked properly, they take on a charmingly beautiful green color, a slightly crisp texture and a bright, almost nutty flavor.

We love making them for the holidays! This is the best side dish to make with turkey dinner. It’s easy to make and I love bright colors. Plus it tastes great. So you should definitely try making this Brussels sprouts and bacon recipe for Thanksgiving (or any dinner) this year.

How to Make Bacon Brussels Sprouts

To prepare sprouts for cooking, you first need to wash them. You can rinse them with warm water and pat dry. If you have more time, try submerging them in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes. Adding 1 teaspoon of baking soda to every 2 cups of water will help clean them more thoroughly than water alone. Remember, if you choose to soak them, you will need to allow extra time for the excess water to drain from them.

Thick cut bacon is my favorite. In a large frying pan, cook the bacon over medium heat until crisp. Is there anything better than the smell of bacon on the stove? No. Let bacon cool on paper towels, then cut into small pieces.

In the same pan with the bacon oil, melt the butter over high heat. Add chopped onion (optional) and Brussels sprouts and toss to combine. Cook until the Brussels sprouts are golden brown. This takes about 12-15 minutes. Make sure to stir the mixture occasionally. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Then return the bacon slices to the pan. Throw everything together and serve!

Recipe Notes, Tips + FAQs

For extra flavor, add some minced garlic while cooking the Brussels sprouts. 😉 Then, if you want to make these taste even more delicious, consider adding these on top:

  • drizzle balsamic vinegar to reduce
  • Shredded Parmesan or Mozzarella
  • grated parmesan cheese

We know some people like their Brussels sprouts to be extra crispy, if that’s the case, drain some of the fat before cooking, or roast the sprouts for a few minutes at the end.

leftovers: Place remaining bean sprouts in an airtight container and refrigerate for 2-3 days. Reheat in a skillet on the stove or on a baking sheet in the oven. Heat to lukewarm. You can also crisp them up under the broiler.
