the best!

Sugar cookies are perfectly decorated and can be customized for any season or holiday! Whether you’re rolling or cutting, sugar cookies are worth the effort (at least in our book). 😉

In fact, they’re my favorite cookie, and we’ve been making the famous sugar cookie recipe since we were kids.

Today, we want to put all the best sugar cookies in one place!

I’ve rounded up a whole bunch of sugar cookie ideas, from frosted to unfrosted, traditional to holiday-themed. Be sure to check out the list, but before you do, check out these tips for making the perfect sugar cookie!

Mixing Tips:

  • Use softened but still cold butter
  • Measure out the dry ingredients.
  • Do not overmix. Mixing further activates the gluten, resulting in a tougher dough.
  • If the recipe calls for freezing the dough, don’t skip this step!Cooling will help the cookies form the perfect shape

Roll out the dough: Many recipes call for you to roll the dough into a decent-sized disc and cool it. It’s a good process to divide the dough before rolling, and you can do it even if the recipe doesn’t specifically call for it.

  • Be careful not to overwork the dough for the same reason you don’t want to overmix – it will stiffen.
  • I like to roll out the dough to about ⅜” thick. Any cookie thinner than this will be crispier and crispier.

Cut: If you are making all the cookies of the same shape and size, you can go ahead and start stamping the cookies. If you’re using different sizes and shapes, then I recommend lightly laying the different shapes on the dough to find out how to best use the space. When done, print the cookies out.

  • You can dip a cookie cutter in flour before pressing the dough
  • Save the pieces to roll out more cookies

Baking Tips: Be sure to put cookies of different sizes on separate plates. Bake the larger and smaller cuts together, or the smaller cookies will burn before the larger ones are done.

  • Generally speaking, you don’t want your cookies to brown at all. To be safe, bake a little. As the cookies cool on the hot pan, they will finish baking to perfection.
  • While one cookie is baking, prepare the other so you can put it in when the oven is idle.
  • Different ovens can cook at different speeds. When making a new recipe, I always start checking the food 2-3 minutes before the suggested cooking time.

Frost or icing

meringue: Royal icing is used when you want to “color” the cookies. You can make different consistency to help you draw shapes/features on the cookies and then fill them. Royal icing must have time to set before storage. Depending on the environment of the room, this may take 3-8 hours.

Sugar Cookie Frosting: This is a delicious and easy-to-use frosting when you just want to frost a cookie and then add sprinkles or other sweets. It’s also a great frosting when you want to use the piping tip with the icing to make different shapes.

Storage Tips

Store sugar cookies in different forms and in different ways:

  • Dough: You can make the dough ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator or freezer. I recommend dividing the dough into smaller portions. From here you can expand these sections into the log or expand to disk. Wrap the sections in plastic wrap, or in foil if frozen. Store in the refrigerator for 1-2 days or up to 3 months in the refrigerator. Thaw before finishing the recipe.
  • Baked: You can store frosted or plain baked cookies. For frosted cookies, be sure to let the frosting set before storing, then separate them with parchment or wax paper. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 5-7 days or in the refrigerator for 3-6 months. They may last longer if they are packaged individually. Note: Sugar cookies with candy on them don’t always freeze best.

This sugar cookie list contains “roll-free” sugar cookie recipes and recipes that require rolling and cutting with a cookie cutter. Both are great, depending on what you need for the occasion!
