This is a breakfast recipe that we often make during holidays, weekend mornings or when we are trying to feed the crowd-similar to our French toast and biscuit egg casserole.

Homemade biscuits and gravy

When you think of good home cooking, do you think of certain recipes? I’m talking about the most comfortable food that my mother or grandma used to make. Cookies and gravy are one of the recipes I thought of!

Homemade biscuits and gravy are classic breakfast recipes that have become staples in our house (we even have our favorite biscuits and gravy casserole). The crazy thing is that I didn’t realize how easy it is to assemble until I finally had enough courage to try it myself!

You can make homemade biscuits to match your sausage gravy, but for simplicity, I often use canned refrigerated biscuits. Especially if we make a sumptuous family breakfast during the holidays, or even just put “breakfast as dinner” together on a busy workday night, it is easier to come up with pre-made things.

Now, I don’t use generic brands for most things. However, I must warn you…I have tried other sausages and nothing can compare to Jimmy Dean. My family likes hot sausage rolls, but if you don’t like spices, stick to regular ones. Or, if you want to make it for a large group of people, please make one each, this is the perfect combination.

How to make sausage gravy

As delicious as buttermilk biscuits, honestly-the gravy is the real star. The best part? The sausage gravy recipe only requires three ingredients! And most likely, you already have 2 on hand.

Cook sausages. To make the sausage gravy, cook the sausage over a medium-high heat and use a spatula to break it as you go.

Make gravy. After the sausage is cooked, carefully add the flour, ½ cup at a time, until the sausage has a nice coating. Slowly add milk until it reaches the desired consistency. (If you want a thicker gravy, add more milk. If you like a thick sauce, add less milk. If you find that there is too much milk, add flour to make it thicker.)

season. Season with salt and pepper and enjoy your super simple and delicious biscuits and gray,

You will be overwhelmed by how few ingredients create so many flavors in such a short period of time. Then when you pour it on some freshly baked buttermilk biscuits? A match made in heaven!

Tips for sausage gravy: Please remember not to drain the excess fat from the sausage after cooking. Sausage drops will help to mix the flour and milk together. Stir the flour thoroughly, let it cook with the sausage and water drops for 1-2 minutes, then slowly add the milk.

Biscuits and gravy changes and frequently asked questions:

Here are some ideas to change the classic B&G!

  • Use rice, cornbread, toast, or mashed potatoes instead of biscuits.
  • Try turkey powder (with 2 tablespoons of butter) or beef powder instead of sausage.
  • Use buttermilk instead of regular milk.
  • Add some spices with chili flakes or Tabasco sauce.
  • Try adding mushrooms or bell peppers, or cooked bacon cubes to change the taste.
  • Make a casserole version to feed the crowd easily

Can biscuits and gravy be frozen? Unfortunately, the cream/milk gravy does not freeze well. The cream/milk will separate during the defrosting process. You can pre-cook the sausage and freeze it (along with all the water droplets) in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

When you are ready to make the gravy, thaw the sausage and follow the written recipe. Cooked biscuits can also be stored in their own airtight freezer containers for up to 3 months until they are ready for use.

Reheat. The remaining biscuits and gravy can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat the gravy in the microwave or stove-top pan until it reaches the temperature you want.

Nothing can compare to some homemade biscuits and gravy! Whether it’s breakfast, dinner or a holiday party, we hope you enjoy this simple recipe.
