A crock pot is a busy mom’s best friend!

Really, anyone on the go needs a relationship with their crock pot. You can put the ingredients together in the morning and go home for a warm home-cooked meal.

From green beans to lasagna to pot roasts and even desserts like rice pudding, there are plenty of recipes you can cook in a crock pot. For this post, I just want to highlight the delicious soups you can make. There’s nothing like coming home on a cold winter’s day with a hot bowl of soup ready to wait. You definitely want to try these soups this season.

General Soup Tips:
  • Cut all ingredients to the same size. For example, chunks of meat and potatoes should be similar in size.
  • If you have time: Brown the meat and tougher vegetables before adding to the pan. This will help bring out the richer flavors from the ingredients.
  • Don’t overfill the pot.
  • Thaw food, especially meat, before cooking.
  • Most soups can be prepared ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator. When making freezer meals, remember to omit the “last added” ingredients. Thaw the soup in the refrigerator overnight, then toss it in the crock pot.

Convert Stove Top Soup to Slow Cooker Soup:

If your soup recipe isn’t already tailored for the slow cooker, don’t worry! Almost any soup can be simmered in a crock pot.

I’ve rounded up some tips to help you turn your stove top recipe into an easy slow cooker meal!

Crock Pot Cooking Time

Generally speaking, the maximum temperature for a crock is about 280°F. The low setting is about 170°F. Generally speaking, the soup should be boiled for 3-4 hours on high heat and 6-8 hours on low heat. (Always refer to your specific crock pot manual for more specific cooking times and guidelines)

Save some ingredients until added at the end

“End” can be literally right before serving, or in the last half hour of cooking.

  • Smaller, softer vegetables, like peas and corn, should not be simmered for several hours or they will become mushy.
  • Dairy products such as milk, sour cream, yogurt, cheese, etc. cannot be added to the end, otherwise they may coagulate after cooking for a long time.
  • Precook pasta, rice, seafood before final addition.
  • Use dried herbs and add at the beginning. If you want to add fresh herbs then add them at the end.
Let’s talk about evaporation

There is hardly any evaporation when using the slow cooker, so you don’t need as much liquid.

  • Once you have the initial ingredients in the pot, pour the liquid over them until they are covered by ½ inch.
  • You can always add more liquid later.
  • If you find too much liquid, remove the lid during the last hour of cooking to allow some of it to evaporate. You can also add roux to thicken it.
  • Does not include any alcohol. Simmering on the stove top allows the alcohol to evaporate, leaving behind a subtle layer of flavor. However, the crock does not allow evaporation and the wine can quickly take over the recipe.
