When Should I Stop Eating Before Hot Yoga?

Even though I started practicing hot yoga this year, I have known my entire life that it is crucial to eat the right type of food, at the right time, in the right amount before taking on hot yoga (or any type of yoga, for that matter).

Generally, we are encouraged to not have eaten 1-2 hours prior to performing Yoga and Breathing (Pranayama) exercises. Having food in the digestive system can disrupt one’s overall practice.

Ideally, you should eat a light snack one hour before doing a yoga class and, by making it as nutritious as possible, you’ll ensure you’ll get the best out of your session. When it comes to nutrition there are two types of nutrients.

If yoga is done in the morning, shortly after waking up, on an empty stomach is preferred. However, if the practice is started 1 – 2 hours after waking up, one’s metabolic rate and food requirements should be considered.
