How Do You Make White Gravy From Scratch?

Tools for Making White Gravy

  • Whisk: To get the smooth consistency you want for this gravy, use a whisk.
  • Liquid measuring cup: For measuring milk, use a liquid measuring cup (not the dry measuring tools you use to measure flour for cookies).
  • Saucepan: A small saucepan is all you need for this white gravy recipe.

Instructions

  • Heat the oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
  • Whisk in flour, salt and pepper until smooth.
  • Stir over medium heat until browned, about 10 minutes.
  • Gradually stir in water or dairy free milk so that no lumps form. Continue cooking and stirring until thick.

Instructions

  • Melt butter over low heat in a small saucepan. Add flour and combine.
  • Stir until the flour is about the color of peanut butter and smells nutty.
  • Allow to come to a simmer, stirring constantly to avoid sticking.
  • Add milk by quarter or half cups until gravy has thickened considerably.
  • Add at least 10 more grinds pepper and another pinch of salt, to taste.
  • 2 tablespoons butter (or other fat)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (or 2 tablespoons cornstarch)
  • 2 cups chicken, beef, turkey, or vegetable broth (or pan drippings)
