Taco Bell has announced the return of the Mexican pizza, a favorite for South Asian communities across the country. Like many children in Indian families, Krish Jagirdar was raised vegetarian, meaning most fast food joints were off the table. “The one place that we were allowed to go to, that we did often go to, was Taco Bell,” he said.

The rumors are true, Taco Bell is bringing back one of the most loved items: the Mexican Pizza. According to Mashable, Mike Grams, vice president and COO at Taco Bell, reportedly confirmed: “We’re bringing back the Mexican Pizza!” Food Blogger Markie_devo in an Instagram post said that the item will be back in store in April or May this year.

Taco Bell says its decision to bring the Mexican pizza back was driven by such fandom. The company credits a Change.org petition by superfan Krish Jagirdar that was signed by 171,717 people urging the chain not to drop it. Jagirdar cited the Mexican pizza’s popularity with South Asian people in the United States.

After an absence of more than a year, Taco Bell has brought back its Mexican Pizza. The fan-favorite item is in Taco Bell locations nationwide on May 19. To promote its cross-cultural creation, the restaurant chain is offering a delivery discount through DoorDash. It’s also premiering Mexican Pizza: The Musical on TikTok later this month.

Taco Bell introduced the item in 1985 and originally called it the “Pizzazz Pizza.” It’s back! Removing the Mexican Pizza sparked outrage among Taco Bell’s loyal fans: An online petition asking for the pizza’s return garnered nearly 200,000 signatures.

Mexican Pizza standom began in 1985 when it was introduced as the “Pizzazz Pizza” before being renamed in 1988. According to Mexican Pizza’s biggest fan and petition organizer, Krish Jagirdar, it’s “an item loved by many, especially the South Asian community.”

Taco Bell took the Mexican Pizza off its menu in 2020 during the height of the covid pandemic. At the time, the chain had decided to simplify its menu because a much higher percentage of orders were delivery and takeout. Mexican Pizza did not make the cut, but it’s very possible that the Yum! Brands (YUM) – Get Yum! Brands, Inc.

In response to the Mexican Pizza’s departure, digital entrepreneur Krish Jagirdar started a Change.org petition in September 2020 to save it from its hapless fate, citing its importance in particular to the South Asian community. It has nearly 172,000 signatures.

Judging by the volume of fan grievances and their efforts calling for Mexican Pizza’s return, it’s assumed the product sold well for the chain. Their pent-up demand should drive significant traffic out of the gate.
