According to the USDA, frozen foods are safe to eat indefinitely. But just because something is ok to consume doesnât mean it will still taste delicious after years in a deep freeze. Hereâs how it works: Zero-degree temps (and below) inactivate any bacteria, yeasts or molds and prevent harmful microorganisms from growing.
âTechnically, food thatâs been kept frozen is safe to eat indefinitely,â she says. âHowever, the longer it stays frozen, the more quality tends to decrease, including changes in taste and texture so there are exceptions to the âindefiniteâ rule.â Hereâs a look at how long items can be stashed before they need to be trashed.
To help make your decision easier, here is a list of foods to eat within three months:
- Cooked meat dishes like beef roast or enchiladas
- Casseroles made with-style soup
- Raw or cooked meat or seafood
- Within a month, you should eat bread and doughnuts without icing, custard, or fruit fillings.
- Meat, poultry, or fish that has not been previously frozen, cooked, or smoked.
Thereâs a short and a long answer here. The short answer is that foods will keep indefinitely in a frozen state. Thatâs right â as long as your freezer is plugged in and functioning normally, frozen foods will never expire, go bad, or pose any health issues.
- Raw sausage (pork, beef, or turkey): 1 to 2 days (refrigerator) or 1 to 2 months (freezer)
- Cooked chicken or turkey dishes: 3 to 4 days (refrigerator) or 4 to 6 months (freezer)
- Fried chicken: 3 to 4 days (refrigerator) or 4 months (freezer)
- Cooked ground chicken or turkey: 3 to 4 days (refrigerator) or 2 to 3 months (freezer)
How long do leftovers last? According to the FDA Food Code, all perishable foods that are opened or prepared should be thrown out after 7 days, maximum. No leftovers should survive in your fridge for longer than that. Some foods should be even be thrown away before the 7 day mark. How long can food last in the freezer?
The long answer is that, while food can safely last almost indefinitely in the freezer, the quality of that food â its taste, color, and texture â declines the longer itâs under.
Perhaps the simplest way to know whether your frozen food is still good is to label it when you put it in the freezer. Information should include the food type, date itâs frozen, and the date after which itâs projected to decline in taste, texture, and quality.

Fruit. âFrozen fruits will last six to nine months in the freezer,â Gorin says. âI like to keep a supply of frozen wild blueberries in my freezer,â Gorin says. âI can use them for so many different types of recipes â from a wild blueberry peanut butter smoothie to wild blueberry pancakes .â.
Larger pieces of meat have less surface area by weight, so they retain more moisture when frozen, Gorin says. This helps preserve their original texture upon thawing and cooking. Likewise, lean cuts of fish are delicate but contain plenty of moisture.
How long does a freezer keep food?
A freezer full of food will usually keep about 2 days if the door is kept shut; a half-full freezer will last about a day. The freezing compartment in a refrigerator may not keep foods frozen as long.
So freeze items you won’t use quickly sooner rather than later. Store all foods at 0° F or lower to retain vitamin content, color, flavor and texture.
Use a free-standing freezer set at 0 °F or below for long-term storage of frozen foods. Keep an appliance thermometer in your freezing compartment or freezer to check the temperature. This is important if you experience power-out or mechanical problems. The temperature in the refrigerator should be set at 40 °F or below. Freezing keeps food safe by slowing the movement of molecules, causing microbes to enter a dormant stage. Freezing preserves food for extended periods because it prevents the growth of microorganisms that cause both food spoilage and foodborne illness.
These methods can leave your foods unsafe to eat. There are three safe ways to thaw food: in the refrigerator, in cold water, or in the microwave. It’s best to plan ahead for slow, safe thawing in the refrigerator. Small items may defrost overnight; most foods require a day or two.
Freezing to 0 °F inactivates any microbes â bacteria, yeasts and molds â present in food. Once thawed, however, these microbes can again become active, multiplying under the right conditions to levels that can lead to foodborne illness.
If there is a power outage, the freezer fails, or if the freezer door has been left ajar by mistake, the food may still be safe to use if ice crystals remain. If the freezer has failed and a repairman is on the way, or it appears the power will be on soon, don’t open the freezer door.

Make sure that frozen foods are wrapped well or in a tightly sealed container. And make sure to keep them cold. “Your frozen foods will keep their quality longer if they are kept in the coldest part of the freezer, such as the bottom or the back of the freezer,” said Stack.
When you buy frozen food, choose packages that do not obviously have ice crystals, since this may indicate that the food has partially defrosted and then refrozen. For bagged frozen foods, give the bag a squeeze to test for freshness.

She said that fresh, whole roasts, steaks and whole chickens will keep their quality for up to a year, but once meats are cut into pieces, their quality freezer life drops to four to six months. Other meats, such as sausage, lose quality after just two months.
This is a common misconception, but the experts say that if you’re still in the safe window for cooking and eating meat, poultry or fish, it’s perfectly safe to refreeze them, provided that the foods were thawed in the refrigerator and kept cold (40°F or below).
While you can safely freeze any food, some foods just don’t freeze well. Stack’s “don’t freeze” list includes salad greens, meat salads made with mayonnaise (e.g. chicken salad), whole eggs and egg yolks and custard pies. So you’re gonna have to eat that whole custard pie (or keep it in your fridge for up to five days). While you can freeze milk and cheese, “they may have some changes in their texture,” said Stack.
