A White Claw rep told Vine Pair it’s “a blend of seltzer water, its gluten-free alcohol base, and a hint of fruit flavor.” And it’s in the same line of beverages as its cousin, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, as well as other portable drinks like Smirnoff Ice and wine coolers.

So while U.S. News & World Report says White Claw’s low-calorie and gluten-free content does not equal a healthier drink, there will be a caloric savings if you drink the beverage instead of other alcoholic drinks.

Defining mixed drinks as keto killers, Knudsen says the low carb value of White Claw is actually a perfect fit for keto dieters. She explained, “Any drink with fruit juice, sweetened sodas, or simple syrups are going to be loaded with carbs and could knock you out of ketosis in a snap.”

There is absolutely nothing “natural” about drinking a fruit-flavored malt liquor beverage out of an aluminum can, especially by a swimming pool in the middle of Arizona. So White Claw’s choice to single out its lime flavor as “natural” as opposed to all the others is a little odd. Is every other White Claw completely artificial?

White Claw is not vodka or beer. White Claw has been compared to everything from vodka soda to the new IPA. It’s neither of these things. White Claw is a flavored malt beverage (FMB). Bartenders and alcohol distributors across the nation say they can barely keep White Claw on the shelves. It’s a common phenomenon: When a bar runs out of White Claw, patrons say it has been “declawed.”

In 2020, White Claw sales continued to soar. Despite global bar and restaurant closings, sales were up triple digits again and continue to climb. White Claw’s off-premise sale success has prompted the entrance of dozens of other hard seltzer and ready-to-drink cocktail brands into the market.
