Orange Chicken Asparagus One Pot Meal
For a healthier alternative to your favorite Chinese dish, try this Orange Chicken and Asparagus. Serve with rice or noodles, or on its own!
I’ve always enjoyed some classic orange chicken (especially served on a bed of tender white crock pot rice), but sometimes it’s nice to lighten it up a bit. This version is healthier, *spoiler alert* and actually easier to make too!
Simple and healthy, but delicious
Some Asian recipes can be time consuming and not great for you, but today I am so excited to share with you an easy, healthy orange chicken and asparagus recipe that you will love.
With just a few ingredients, you can make this in no time, and it tastes good too!
The sauce for this recipe is pretty simple – pretty much just soy sauce, honey, and orange juice. Although simple, the flavor is great. It’s almost hard to believe it’s considered healthy! I also love that it’s easy enough and my picky kids love it too.

Did I mention this is a one pot meal?
Yes, you heard that. One pot (seems like this recipe couldn’t be any better!!).
Chick. Heat sesame oil in a large pan. Sauté the chicken pieces, garlic and red pepper flakes for about 7 minutes.
asparagus. Add chopped asparagus and cook for another 3 minutes.
Sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, sesame seeds, juice, and zest of 1 orange. Add to skillet and cook for 1 minute.
Serve. Serve with plain rice or rice of your choice (like fried rice or cauliflower rice).
You can also serve it with some Asians like:
Replenish: Orange chicken is an easy vegetable addition. Some common favorites include broccoli, peas, and bell peppers. If you add too many extra veggies, you may want to double the amount of sauce you make so everything gets covered in the orange juice.
a great make ahead recipe
Make ahead: You can prepare all the ingredients 1-2 days in advance and store them in separate containers in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook them all. You can also store them in individual freezer bags and freeze for 2-3 months. When you’re ready to use, let the chicken and other ingredients thaw in the refrigerator and cook according to the recipe instructions.
- If you are freezing the stock, you will need to blanch the asparagus first. You can do this by bringing a pot of water to a boil. Add the chopped asparagus and cook for 3-5 minutes, depending on the size of the stems. Drain and immediately place asparagus in cold water. Once they are cool and dry, then place them in a freezer-safe bag.
leftovers: Place leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for 3-4 days. For longer storage, please refrigerate for 2-3 months. For best results, reheat in a pan, stirring until hot. If you’re in a hurry, you can reheat in the microwave.
