Why Do I Have An Obsession With Food?

When food cravings become constant they lead to food obsession. Your body is so deprived that it’s literally crying for food. What usually happens then is that your food cravings get so intense that you eat something sweet or something you like in order to relieve the pressure.

As soon as we are born, food and comfort become permanently intertwined with who we are. Think about it, from the moment we are held in security by our mothers and fed snug in their arms, food is immediately connected with being held, being safe and comforted. This connection and want for comfort stays with us for the rest of our lives.

How to Stop Being Obsessed With Food

  1. Know your triggers. Make a list of all the foods that preoccupy your thoughts and lead you to uncontrollable eating.
  2. Restrict access to your trigger foods, but don’t give them up cold turkey. If you abstain from dessert completely, it will only heighten your craving.
  3. Find substitutes for your trigger foods.
  • Eating food causes problems such as depression, anxiety, self-loathing, or guilt.
  • You need to eat more and more food to reduce negative emotions or increase pleasure.
  • Eating the same amount of food doesn’t reduce negative emotions or increase pleasure the way it used to.

Food addiction is less of an addiction to food than it is than a biological response to food scarcity aka dieting aka food rules. We get this positive response because we want to be fueled – that’s why we feel good when we eat!

Weight is not a food + exercise equation that our society (& the diet, ‘wellness,’ and ‘fitness’ industries) wants us to believe is in our complete control with food rules.
