Does Pesto Have Rennet?

For those Target lovers out there, their Good & Gather brand basil pesto sauce is a great, keto-friendly pesto. You can find this product online or in stores at Target, priced at $56.49 for a 7-ounce container.

If your pesto is made with as vegetarian cheese, it is vegetarian. If it is made without cheese at all, it is vegan. Most vegetarians are not vegan. Most vegetarian eaters consume dairy products. By that token, as last by as the Parmesan cheese used is rennet-free, the pesto is vegetarian but not vegan.

Traditional pesto has a bight, herby flavor profile with a garlicky, savory kick. For those who don’t love basil, pesto comes in varieties made with spinach, arugula, kale, parsley, cilantro, and many other greens. There are also varieties of pesto made with red peppers, sundried tomatoes, and olives.

And even worse, some of the packaging of these cheeses do not include the exact kind of rennet used, so vegetarians could have been eating food that goes against their ethics for years without even knowing. The majority of cheeses that are made using animal rennet are originally European cheeses.

What is the pesto that is taken from calf stomachs?

So be alert as you order pesto dishes at restaurants. Some of the pesto options below contain “rennet, ” which is an enzyme taken from calf stomachs. It is a byproduct of the veal industry, and it requires the death of baby calves.

The “ Free From” pesto flavors by Le Conserve Della Nonna are considered vegan. However, the Pesto Alla Genovese flavor contains cheese.
